Allentown, PA (May 19, 2012) - Louisville Bats infielder Chris Valaika is interviewed after a game against the Lehigh Valley IronPigs.

They play a game at Coca-Cola Park where hula hoops are placed on the field, and people in the stands try to throw tennis balls into them. There are prizes, including cash, if your ball lands in a hoop and stays there. (I guess they sell the balls during the game.) So Valaika was interviewed in a rain of tennis balls. Every once in awhile, he would swat one away if threatened to hit him.

Valaika signed with the Marlins this year. He made the big league roster, but is now on the DL until at least August. He broke his wrist trying to put a swipe tag on former Bats teammate Yonder Alonso. What rotten luck.

Trade Off

Last spring (April 2012), the Atlanta Braves traded pitcher J.J. Hoover to the Reds for third baseman Juan Francisco.

The two went head to head today. Francisco ended up hitting a grand slam off Hoover, the first runs he’d given up in 11 innings.

Guess the Braves won the trade…for today, anyway.

That is Heinz Field, home of the Steelers at left - the yellow structure. PNC Park, home of the Pirates, is across the parking lot from there. The first yellow suspension bridge is the Roberto Clemente Bridge. (The other two of the “Three Sisters” are the Andy Warhol Bridge and the Rachel Carson Bridge.)

The Roberto Clemente Bridge leads right to PNC Park. The bridge is closed to cars on game days, to accommodate all the pedestrians walking to the stadiums.
