Babe Ruth’s Last Resting Place
The monument marking the grave sites of George Herman “Babe” Ruth, Jr. and his second wife, Claire Merritt Ruth, at Gate of Heaven Cemetery in Hawthorne, NY.
The year of birth listed for Claire is three years later than her actual birth date - a woman’s vanity, perhaps.
The items left by the monument were left by fans. Everything from conventional offerings like flowers, flags, and plants, to baseball memorabilia like caps, bats, balls, pins, and gloves, to last-minute “gifts” like coins and stones. Someone even left a cigar. The staff at Gate of Heaven leaves the items there as long as they are reasonably presentable.
Many of the baseballs have messages written on them: young children’s names, pleas for help for the Yankees, “rest in peace” wishes, etc.
